Batik is the ancient Indonesian practice of applying hot wax to fabric to create a resist pattern with dye. Many cultures throughout history have used this method to create stunning patterns for clothing, textiles, and art.

Holly will show students how to utilize a variety of stamping tools and hot wax to create patterns on cotton bandanas. Then the bandanas will be dyed and the wax removed, leaving the design behind. Holly will demonstrate how to create detailed designs or simple patterns so everyone can leave with a piece of wearable art they are proud of, regardless of skill level.

Everyone will go home with two bandanas dyed with their custom designs.

Aprons will be provided, but remember you are working with hot wax and dye. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy.

About the Instructor:

Holly is a new transplant to Detroit having recently moved from St. Louis, Missouri. Holly taught a variety of art and plant classes at an art studio in the Central West End of St. Louis – dyeing, planting, felting, paper crafting, candle making, abstract painting, and more. She has a B.A. in Advertising and experience in other creative industries – food photography, recipe development, technical writing and print design. Students will appreciate her upbeat and laid-back approach to creating art. You will hear her signature phrase “it’s going to look hand-made because it is!” and will foster your confidence to create. Holly believes art is all about the “making” – anyone can buy art, but learning to make it is much more interesting!
