Utilize your abandoned notebooks, paper scraps, and even junk mail to create interesting and scrappy artist journals. These "bin books" will use up paper that is otherwise destined for the trash bin and give new life to your fine art paper scraps. Your pages will be different and every book will be unique - a "choose your own adventure" on each page!

Students will use paper trimmers, edge rounders, textured scissors, and more fun tools to create organized yet fun journals with a "Field Notes" aesthetic. No bookbinding skills are required - we will bind our books with staples. Your books will feature a variety of paper types, textures, colors, and even pockets! The variety in your journal will spark creativity in deciding how to utilize each page.

Plenty of cardstock for covers and paper guts will be provided, as well as the tools needed to create 3 or more journals during class. You will leave with the skills to create more books with your future scraps! Students are encouraged to bring half-used sketchbooks, cardstock, abandoned notebooks, paper scraps, junk mail, washi tape, stickers and more embellishments to add to their journals. Paper should be mostly blank, but the occasional doodle or print can make a sweet addition to any page. Use your imagination!

About the Instructor:

Holly is a new transplant to Detroit having recently moved from St. Louis, Missouri. Holly taught a variety of art and plant classes at an art studio in the Central West End of St. Louis – dyeing, planting, felting, paper crafting, candle making, abstract painting, and more. She has a B.A. in Advertising and experience in other creative industries – food photography, recipe development, technical writing and print design. Students will appreciate her upbeat and laid-back approach to creating art. You will hear her signature phrase “it’s going to look hand-made because it is!” and will foster your confidence to create. Holly believes art is all about the “making” – anyone can buy art, but learning to make it is much more interesting!
