Learn the basics of Indigo dyeing and the Japanese art of Shibori. During this three hour make & take workshop we will fold, tie, and use resist methods to create unique designs on cotton bandanas. Each bandana will be hand-dyed in a beautiful blue vat of natural indigo. We'll have all the materials and supplies needed for the project. We also welcome and encourage you to bring an item of your own!
Bring a worn pair of jeans, a drab blouse or sweater - this is your opportunity to play with revitalizing a piece of your own clothing! Our indigo dye bath will create a fresh blue upon white or cream fabric or add dimension to a color that just isn't you - starting with a yellow, red or purple garment for a rainbow of possibilities! All fabrics must be a natural fiber - no synthetics. Examples include: Cotton, Wool, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Rayon, Ramie.
About the Instructor:
Holly is a new transplant to Detroit having recently moved from St. Louis, Missouri. Holly taught a variety of art and plant classes at an art studio in the Central West End of St. Louis – dyeing, planting, felting, paper crafting, candle making, abstract painting, and more. She has a B.A. in Advertising and experience in other creative industries – food photography, recipe development, technical writing and print design. Students will appreciate her upbeat and laid-back approach to creating art. You will hear her signature phrase “it’s going to look hand-made because it is!” and will foster your confidence to create. Holly believes art is all about the “making” – anyone can buy art, but learning to make it is much more interesting!
